There are memories we choose to preserve, and others that remain with us long after we've left the places that formed us. In What We Carry, Stanek Gallery presents a solo exhibition of new work by Miami-based artist SAMDI that reflects on the invisible inheritance of home, its people, its culture, its vibrations throughout time, and the emotional weight it continues to hold after displacement. Working primarily through the human figure and portraiture, SAMDI approaches painting without predetermined narratives or fixed outcomes. Each canvas begins as an intuitive conversation with material, often starting with spray paint before shifting across mediums as the work evolves. Rather than illustrating a concept, he responds to the forms, gestures, and emotional currents that emerge through his personal experiences as they collide with the act of painting itself. The result is a spontaneous and deeply personal body of work. For this exhibition, that intuitive process becomes a means of revisiting the warmth and familiarity of a home left behind before political and social turbulence forced his departure. Rather than depicting memory literally, SAMDI allows fragments of his cultural inheritance to surface organically through the language of paint. His paintings are informed by the artists whose works once filled the homes of his youth, not through imitation, but through resonance. The raw, spiritual urgency and expressive mark-making associated with the Saint-Soleil movement, particularly the work of Jean-Claude "Tiga" Garoute, exists alongside the graceful line, elegance, and quiet lyricism found in the School of Beauty painters such as Bernard Séjourné. Birds, flowers, figures, and symbolic forms drift naturally between abstraction and representation, echoing the seamless coexistence of human and natural worlds found throughout Haitian visual traditions. These influences are not adopted as stylistic quotations but absorbed as emotional character traits. Each contributes its own rhythm, texture, and sensibility, joining SAMDI's lived experience and distinct voice to create paintings that resist singular definition. His work becomes an amalgamation, a layered vocabulary built from memory, heritage, intuition, and discovery. Like quilts assembled from cherished fragments, the paintings in What We Carry gather together the disparate threads that shape identity. Childhood memories, cultural references, family histories, artistic lineages, and personal experience are stitched into compositions that hold multiple histories at once. Every layer, every mark, and every shift in medium contributes to a larger emotional whole. In these works, the canvas becomes more than a surface for image-making. It becomes a place where memory is preserved, where cultural inheritance is honored, and where the many colors and textures of life can coexist within a single visual and spiritual space. What We Carry opens at Stanek Gallery Miami on September 18, 2026 with an artist reception taking place from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and the exhibition will remain on view through November 7, 2026.
