Deborah Fine

March 19, 2016

The sun peeking through the clouds on a rainy day, the grey masses that form in the horizon when a storm is approaching, the feeling of laying in the grass on the first days of summer. These are the moments and places we are transported to when viewing Deborah Fine's abstract landscape paintings.

Working in pastel on paper and acrylic on canvas, Deborah draws her inspiration from the surrounding landscape, be it a view from her studio in Philadelphia or an artist's residency in Vermont. The way colors form synergistic patterns and the emotion they evoke are all captured and reinterpreted in Deborah's brushstrokes.

Through a process of layering, constructing, and deconstructing, an atmosphere organically emerges where movement and color transitions draw your eye from one point to another as if putting together the pieces of a puzzle and finding a new detail upon each reflection.

In the artist's words:

For me, art is a problem solving exploration, where emotion precedes thought. My work focuses on the balance and tensions between nature and human nature.

A single mark or line on a blank surface provides a starting point. Once begun, the work is shaped by an evolving process during which I am constantly reacting to what I see on my canvas by taking things apart and putting them back together again.

The act of adjusting these elements creates layers of unexpected symbols and textures resulting in movement, rhythm and balance. Every discovery requires a response.  My focus is on the relationship between line, color and form and how I want them to function in the space while taking the viewer on a journey through the work. This evolution continues until I reach the point where there is nothing left to be changed and I realize that the piece is complete.
