FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (PHILADELPHIA, PA) September 3, 2019 – Stanek Gallery, a nationally-recognized, Old City-based pioneer in the gallery community, announced today the opening of upcoming Autumn exhibition titled “FOUNDATIONS”. Inspired by the unspoken relationship between the works of master artists Valerio D’Ospina and Katherine Stanek, this exhibition is profound in content and uniquely powerful.
Presenting a brand new body of sculptural works from Gallery Owner and Director Katherine Stanek, and a new collection of paintings from Philadelphia artist Valerio D’Ospina, “FOUNDATIONS” underscores the strength and vibrance of the local Philadelphia arts community.
“At Stanek gallery, we have established a reputation of selecting artists and composing exhibitions that are fluid and graceful,” said Katherine Stanek, Owner and Director of Stanek Gallery, and exhibiting artist. “The room is composed like an expertly rendered painting that is inviting, intriguing and engaging. When we invited Valerio D’Ospina to exhibit his extraordinary paintings with Stanek Gallery, we had yet to choose a sculptor to show alongside him. Once I entered D’Ospina’s Philadelphia studio and saw his new work, I immediately felt a connection and knew that our work needed to be exhibited together. This new body of work that I have chosen to exhibit marks the first time that I have shown in my own gallery since its inception in 2015—and this natural pairing of our works is truly powerful.”
Featured in the exhibition is a sprawling collection of D’Ospina’s oil paintings, unique in their dramatic energy and dynamism. D’Ospina expertly renders in paint the subjects that intrigue him, capturing images of the tops of skyscrapers from a helicopter above, city streets from speeding cabs, ships in the midst of construction, and country roads from the vantage of his bicycle. Through the drama of personal experience, D’Ospina distills the very essence of life and movement, demonstrating his original voice and contemporary aesthetic.
Accompanying these paintings are the powerful and evocative sculptural works of Katherine Stanek. Founded in the relationship between artist and material, Stanek’s works have a life and story of their own. Driven by concepts and questions, Stanek communicates in concrete the processes of destruction and rejuvenation inherent in the cycles of life. Inspired by notions of resilience and strength, these new works are a testament to Stanek’s mastery of her medium.
“FOUNDATIONS” debuts with an opening reception on First Friday, September 6th, 2019 in Old City, Philadelphia. The exhibition continues through October 26th, 2019.
